Enjoy reading...

How did your business get started and who stands behind the company?

We like to describe what we do at Zana as "handmade lifestyle". We are constantly evolving and widening our product range. We started off as an online store selling fun and graphic cushions and now we fabric pouches, bags and a wide variety of other goods. Everything we do is dreamed up and made in Cape Town by our team and we really value this hands on approach.

Sue, the co-founder of Zana, has many years experience in printing and production industry and I have experience in design and development. This really aided us in starting Zana.

Your beautiful studio is in Woodstock - a former industrial area in Cape Town. What has changed in the last years and why is the area getting more and more popular among creatives?

Woodstock is the new hub of creativity in Cape Town. What makes Woodstock really special for creatives is that it is so close to the city and because it is still up and coming, the rents are affordable, the spaces are big and there is lots happening.

How does a typical working day look like?

I get in at 9 and catch up with the Zana girls about the evening past. I then answer some emails and deal with Etsy inbox questions. I otherwise work with Nikki, our designer, to decide on mailer ideas and discuss shoots.

What makes Zana so special?

I would say the small things. I love my job and it doesn´t even feel like a job. I feel like I am constantly working on a fun college project. But it is not always all fun and games so hearing from our customers is always really positive for me. I love receiving tweets from people complimenting on us, our mailers, our customer service etc. That is what really reminds me we have something good going.

Cape Town is the Design Capital of 2014. What has happened this year in the city?

Things are popping up all over the place! We did a large market called Kamersvol Geskenke at the castle in the city for World Design Capital.

How do you spend the perfect weekend in Cape Town?

Sleeping in, going to the market and getting some fresh baked bread. Going to Silvermine dam and braaing with friends.
